On the bullwhip and inventory variance produced by an ordering policy

چکیده
The Bullwhip Problem in supply chains is +rst outlined. A discrete control theory model of a generic model of a replenishment rule is presented. From this model, an analytical expression for bullwhip is derived that is directly equivalent to the common statistical measure often used in simulation, statistical and empirical studies to quantify the bullwhip e1ect. This analytical expression clearly shows that bullwhip can be reduced by taking a fraction of the error in the inventory position and pipeline position, rather then account for all of the errors every time an ordering decision is made as is common in many scheduling systems. Furthermore, increasing the average age of the forecast reduces bullwhip, as does reducing the production lead-time. Next an analytical expression for the variance of the inventory position is derived and used together with the bullwhip expression to determine suitable ordering system designs that minimise both bullwhip and inventory variance for a range of weightings between the two variances. The relationship between our Bullwhip metric and the control theory metric Noise Bandwidth is highlighted. This contribution then derives and exploits an analytical expression for the Integral of Time ∗ Absolute Error (ITAE) criterion often used to quantify inventory responsiveness in response to a deterministic demand. The results form a Decision Support System that can be used to design balanced supply chain ordering decisions and clearly shows how the Bullwhip E1ect can be reduced, at the expense of increased inventory recovery times. Thus, this paper presents the general solution to the bullwhip problem on a sound mathematical basis. ? 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Application of Åström’s method to supply chain inventory problems: A reverse logistics scenario
Abstract: A simple dynamic model of a hybrid manufacturing / remanufacturing system is investigated. In particular we study an infinite horizon, continuous time, APIOBPCS (Automatic Pipeline Inventory and Order Based Production Control System) model. We specifically highlight the effect of remanufacturing lead-time and the return rate on the inventory variance and bullwhip produced by the order...
متن کاملControlling the Bullwhip Effect in a Supply Chain Network with an Inventory Replenishment Policy by a Robust Control Method
This paper develops a mathematical model using differential equations and considers a bullwhip effect in a supply chain network with multiple retailers and distributors. To ensure the stability of the entire system and reduce the bullwhip effect, a robust control method and an inventory replenishment policy are proposed. This shows that the choice of the output matrix may reduce the bullwhip ef...
متن کاملState space investigation of bullwhip with arbitrary demand processes
Abstract Using state space techniques we study a “myopic” order-up-to policy. The policy is myopic because is it is optimal at minimising local inventory holding and shortage costs. In particular we study the bullwhip effect produced by the replenishment policy reacting arbitrary stochastic demand processes. We reveal that bullwhip is fundamentally caused by the co-variance between the inventor...
متن کاملExploring the Bullwhip Effect and Inventory Stability in a Seasonal Supply Chain
The bullwhip effect is defined as the distortion of demand information as one moves upstream in the supply chain, causing severe inefficiencies in the whole supply chain. Although extensive research has been conducted to study the causes of the bullwhip effect and seek mitigation solutions with respect to several demand processes, less attention has been devoted to the ...

We consider how lead-times create the bullwhip effect in an inventory replenishment system. The inventory system is a combination of a specific demand process, a forecasting method, and a replenishment policy. Previous studies have evaluated the bullwhip effect when some of the system parameters such the forecasting model, demand process, or the lead-time are changed. This type of analyses has ...
